Have you received any of the following Google Chrome Profile Error messages recently?
Your Profile could not be opened correctly.
Some features may be unavailable. Please check that the profile exists and you have permission to read and write its contents.
Your Profile can not be used because it is from a newer version of Google Chrome.
Some features may be unavailable. Please specify a different profile directory or use a newer version of Chrome.
Both these errors have a common solution! The file “Web Data” is the culprit! Once you delete or rename this file, this annoying error messages are gone! But you are not sure? Whether this has really corrected your problem or just removed the erroneous messages? You are also in doubt! Whether deleting or renaming this file might remove your saved form data, passwords and synced bookmarks etc ?
Don’t worry! Everything is well and Google Chrome should return to normalcy! You might even check my restarting Chrome and checking whether your bookmarks, saved form data and passwords are there are not?
So where is the “Web Data” file located?
The following is the location of the crisis causing file in Windows 7 or Vista.
Replace your UserName with the user name on your Windows directory. C: is the Windows drive or the drive where you installed Windows. It can be D: or E: or whatever.
You can know your user profile location by pressing Win+R keys to open the run window and typing %userprofile% in the box. This will open the default location for your user profile in Windows Explorer. From then, you can easily navigate to the above said path.
If you want the location in other operating systems, these are the locations.
- Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default
- Mac OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default
- Linux: ~/.config/google-chrome/Default
What is the Reason behind Google Chrome Profile Errors?
The first error may be basically due to a corrupted user profile. Or otherwise, you might have unknowingly deleted your profile folder or data. The main cause could be that, you don’t have read and write permissions on this profile folder. Probably the system administrator hasn’t given privileges to this user or somebody might have changed the security settings.
Once you delete “Web Data” file and re-install Google Chrome, this error message should be gone. You might need to re-start your PC sometimes, if the Chrome icon doesn’t go away after uninstall in the taskbar.
The second error reason can be mainly if you have uninstalled a dev or canary version of Chrome. The builds of Chrome has different versions like Stable, Beta, Dev and Canary. The upgrade path is generally in this fashion.
Stable -> Beta -> Dev -> Canary
But after testing a dev version, you are getting errors or didn’t like its features, you have to downgrade to a lower version like Beta or Stable version. But the downgrade is not without problems.
To downgrade, you just need to uninstall the latest dev or canary version and re-install the stable or beta version. But when you uninstall the newer version, the new profile settings are created. So in order to delete that settings, you should delete or backup the “Web Data” file.
I just fell into the loop of the second error and renamed the error causing file. And Hoila! The irritating pop-up message was gone when I re-installed the beta version of Chrome. With regards to my saved form data, passwords and bookmarks, all were there. The only exception being that the my custom search engine was gone.
